CHALLENGE
To monitor the effects of climate change on Arctic coastalecosystems, the client needed a reliable, programmable system to measure variables such as:
- Water temperature
- Salinity
- Turbidity
Understanding these parameters is key to protecting biodiversity and supporting adaptive management of Arctic fjords.

SOLUTION
Industrial Shields provided a scalable monitoring system based on open-source PLCs:
- Installation of 12 outdoor mesocosms, 3 of them used as controls.
- Each mesocosm includes:
- 3-way temperature valve
-
2-way fresh water valve
-
2-way fresh water valve
- All connected to M-Duino 42+ PLCs with analog inputs.
- 1 PLC controls 3 mesocosms; a master PLC handles:
- Data logging via µSD card
-
Communication with the control PC via WebSocket over RJ45.

Communication with the control PC via WebSocket over RJ45.
- A custom C# interface manages real-time monitoring and control.

RESULT
Remote management from anywhere.
Reliable data acquisition on key environmental indicators.
Experimental control for studying warming effects under semi-natural conditions.
Easy integration with sensors via RS-485.
